Public Health and Determinants of Good Health

Health is a condition of emotional, physical, and mental well-being where infirmity and illness are absent. It involves being alert to your body’s physiological functions, identifying and regulating any body changes that may be a result of physiological processes, and ensuring that you get the proper amount of sleep, rest, and eat to maintain optimal health. The pursuit of health encompasses a person’s lifestyle as it encompasses their emotions, physical and mental health. Emotional and mental health is the result of one’s interactions with both internal and external people, circumstances, and environment.

Health, as a state of well-being, implies that you can enjoy your life to the fullest by functioning properly and efficiently. In order to attain health, make sure that all three components of health are present: good health, physical health, and mental health. Your health needs to start well before you get sick and must be maintained throughout your life.

Good health is the result of overall health that includes the three components mentioned above. Poor health on the other hand is the outcome of any physical illness, while good health is the result of overall health that includes the above two components, as well as a positive attitude. In addition to this, there are some environmental factors that you can avoid or ignore to some extent if you want to achieve good health. For instance, smoking and alcohol consumption may cause certain physical ailments, but they are not as detrimental or cancer-causing as are cigarettes and drinking.

On the other hand, good health is associated with a higher life expectancy, decreased incidence of chronic diseases, and a lower chance of acquiring any of the killer diseases like diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, cancer, and Alzheimer’s. These are also associated with a longer life span. Life expectancy in the developed countries is among the highest in the world, especially in comparison to the life expectancy in the underdeveloped and developing countries. And it is believed that physical well-being and a high level of social trust are two of the key components of a healthy and prosperous society.

Now let us discuss in detail the physical and social factors that have a bearing on a person’s health. A physically healthy individual is one who has high levels of energy, stamina, and who is fit and is physically active. High caloric intake with sufficient physical activity and a good-quality diet is necessary to maintain health and optimize life. In contrast, an unhealthy individual is an individual who lacks sufficient physical activity but is overweight or obese, and has a high caloric intake and sedentary lifestyle. These individuals may suffer from numerous health problems, including obesity, heart disease, diabetes, osteoporosis, stroke, cancer, and various forms of stress.
